BRGY. BALAOI, PAGUDPUD – All gears are set for the much-anticipated 2023 NextGen Pilipinas Surfing Nationals, the national surfing circuit that will determine the country’s top surfers in the Men’s Shortboard, Men’s Longboard, Women’s Shortboard, Women’s Longboard, and Juniors Divisions.
The SurfIN Pagudpud: Ilocos Norte surfing competition makes a debut in the national tour as the inaugural leg of the surfing circuit from September 1-7, 2023. Over 200 of the country’s most skilled surfers are expected to compete, battling for crucial points that contribute to the annual national rankings. The surfers with the highest points at the end of the tour will earn a coveted spot in the Philippine National Surfing Team.
Last year’s standout performers include Noah Arkfeld (Men’s Shortboard), Jomarie Ebueza (Men’s Longboard), Vea Estrellado (Women’s Shortboard), Aping Agudo (Women’s Longboard), Tony Espejon (Junior Boys), and Mara Lopez (Junior Girls).
Top surfers who aspire to be on the national team are being scouted not only for their athletic abilities but also for their discipline, moral character, aptitude, and attitude, as stated in Section 13-i. of Republic Act No. 6847 or the Philippine Sports Commission Act.
Following the SurfIN Pagudpud event, the NextGen Pilipinas Surfing Nationals will continue with a stop in Eastern Samar for the Calicoan Odyssey Waves. The tour will then move to Baler, historically known as the birthplace of Philippine Surfing. The thrilling journey will conclude after additional legs in Borongan, Samar, and Cabugao, Ilocos Norte.
The coastal town in the northernmost tip of Luzon has long been a surfer’s paradise showcasing two of the country’s most beautiful waves: Vista and Heartbreak. The 2023 NextGen Pilipinas Surfing Nationals is made possible by the collaborative efforts of the United Philippines Surfing Association (UPSA) and the Tingog Partylist.
