San Juan, La Union, Philippines – The La Union High Performance Longboard Workshop concluded its second and final day with an afternoon session dedicated to the intricacies of competitive longboard surfing.
Participants got a rare glimpse into the mindset of WSL and ISA Longboard athlete, Jay-r Esquivel, as he shared his game-day preparation secrets – both mental and physical. We were also honored to hear from UPSA National Coach, Ian Saguan, who offered insights into coaching high-performance athletes, acknowledging the Philippines’ emerging journey in this field with a powerful message: we are ready to do better and be better!

This workshop series represents UPSA’s proactive approach to raising the bar for Philippine surfing across the board – in competition, judging, and coaching. The call to action was clear from Coach Ian Saguan and Allan Derecho: let’s unite as a surfing community to elevate our standards at every level.
