UPSA hosts the country’s premiere professional surfing championship tournaments with multiple competitions held at different regions around the Philippines. These events are sanctioned under your local government unit (LGU) as part of the only official national competitions in a unifying and collective series of national legs around the country.

The National Governing Body for Surfing in the Philippines

The United Philippine Surfing Association (UPSA) is the sole recognized National Sports Association (NSA) for the development and promotion of surfing in the Philippines. This recognition was granted by the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) and the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) through Republic Act 6847.

UPSA is recognized by the International Olympic Committee as the National Federation for the Philippines under the International Surfing Association (ISA), the world governing authority for surfing.

As the official NSA for surfing, UPSA is responsible for developing and promoting the sport. This includes the identification and training of athletes, the creation of competition and event opportunities, and the establishment of rules and regulations for the sport.

Transitioning to a Regional Format

In the coming years, the UPSA National Tour will transition to a regional structure. Local competitions within each region will determine regional rankings, which will then be used to select participants for the national ranking competitions. Ultimately, the Philippine National Team will be chosen from the pool of top performers.

Partnerships and Sponsorships

By partnering with us, you can take part in our global initiative to help drive tourism back to the Philippines. More than providing a corporate sponsorship, you would be helping to promote a well-loved activity in our local surfing communities.

Get a chance to associate your brand with our sustainability initiatives by promoting and supporting awareness in the local economy, hotels, restaurants, and surfing associations found in the country.

With your participation, UPSA looks forward to maintaining and growing these great events each year.

Points and Ranking Rules

As the official National Sports Association (NSA) for surfing in the Philippines, the United Philippine Surfing Association (UPSA) is responsible for the selection of the Philippine National Surfing Team, across all divisions, categories and age brackets.

Only the top four (4) athletes in both Men’s and Women’s Open Shortboard and Longboard divisions shall be considered for the Philippine Surfing National Team’s selection criteria.

10.1. Selection Criteria of the UPSA Rule Book

Selection is based on:

  1. UPSA-sanctioned National Events
  2. International-sanctioned Events:
    • Such as WSL where the qualification level exceeds the parallel level of the UPSA National Events.
      • WSL Challenger Series (CS)
      • WSL Championship Tour (Shortboard),
      • WSL World Longboard Tour (Longboard).

10.2. Rankings and Seedings Selection

  • UPSA reserves the right to provide positions for the top 16 seeded surfers based on tournament rankings (Section III. Article 1.6 of the UPSA Rule Book).
  • Final results for the UPSA National Tour will be calculated of the four (4) best results of the year. In the event there are four (4) or less events, all events will be counted (Section V. Article 1 of the UPSA Rule Book).
  • In the event of an equal ranking tie break while the National Tour is on-going, the selection for the first seeded equal rank for the next event will be based on the following technicalities:
    1. The first seeded will be the athlete that reached the highest round in the previous event.
    2. If athletes with equal ranks reached the same round in the previous event, then the selection for the first seeded is the athlete that reached the highest total heat score from the previous event.

For any inquiries regarding the rankings, please contact us on Facebook and Instagram, or send us an email at hello@upsa.ph with the following email subject:
